When to avoid amoxicillin

Certain health conditions or other factors could increase some risks with amoxicillin oral forms. Because of this, doctors may not prescribe amoxicillin in these cases. These health conditions or other factors are called contraindications.

Here’s a list of amoxicillin’s contraindications:

  • Past allergic reaction to cephalosporins: If you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to cephalosporin antibiotics, taking amoxicillin may cause a life threatening allergic reaction. Examples of cephalosporins include cephalexin and cefixime (Suprax).
  • Past allergic reaction to other penicillins: If you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to other penicillin antibiotics, taking amoxicillin may cause a life threatening allergic reaction. Examples of other penicillins include penicillin VK and dicloxacillin.
  • Past allergic reaction to amoxicillin: If you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to amoxicillin oral forms, taking it again may cause a life threatening allergic reaction.

Before you start taking amoxicillin, tell your doctor if anything listed above relates to you. They can recommend whether you should take amoxicillin.

Amoxicillin interactions with alcohol
